Visiting Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto

I recently visited Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada in Toronto along with my wife and 2-yr old son.  The place is amazing and quite a lot of fun, whether you’re an adult or a child.  At our local food supermarket, Loblaws – my son is always excited about seeing the lobsters in the seafood area.  So lets just say, that he was quite impressed with the different lobsters, sharks, fish, eels, etc that are abundant here.  I didn’t photograph this visit, documentary style, because a) its kind of dark there and I don’t want to use a flash and b) I only brought my Canon 5D2 with 85mm f1.2 lens.  This lens focus like “a glacier” as Ryan Brenizer once noted. Its certainly not meant for much action, so in this environment it was a little tricky at times.  I chose this lens because I wanted the fantastic dof (depth of focus) it gives as I really wanted to separate my ‘subjects’ from their background so that they really stand out.  This also meant it would be kinda hard to get the entire shark in the frame as well, but next time I might bring the 50mm f1.4 with me.  Check out this place if you still haven’t – its not cheap but its very well worth it.

*just wanted to add that it doesn’t take much skill to photograph animals in a fish tank. Its not like there is anywhere for them to go..
