Another year, another trip to Montreal.  I always have a fabulous time there on these travels.  Along with my wife and 2.5yr old son, we took the VIA Train on a 5-hour journey from Toronto.  The weather wasn’t the best as half the time it was windy, cold and raining.  However, we made the best of it and did lots of walking around when the weather was good.  I shoot both film and digital, but lately for all my travels and personal projects I have shot just film.  It speaks to me in a different way that my Canon gear never has.  The results from my Pentax 645n medium format camera are simply amazing to me.  In this case I shot Kodak Ektar 100 film and that film is best on sunny days with lots of colour.  I wish we had stayed longer and/or the weather was a bit better as there were some missed opportunities to document other parts of Old Montreal.  No worries, there is always next year 🙂  This was scanned by Caribou Film Lab in Toronto.

I met Allison and Hin in downtown Toronto at the U of T campus just in front of Convocation Hall.  It was a very bright and warm spring day.  They are both students there and we walked around the campus making pictures.   I had a fantastic time with these guys and here are some pictures from that day. I shot this session on my Canon 5D Mark II and Pentax 645n with Kodak Portra 400 film.  Scanned by Caribou Film Lab.

Recently I photographed a 1st Communion Day for Jack & Julian in Toronto.  It consisted of taking getting-ready portraits at their house followed by Reception photos at St. George Golf & Country Club.  I wasn’t able to photograph at the Church as those are generally prohibited for this particular Ceremony.  I had photographed Jack’s older brother’s 1st Communion 2 years ago, so it was very nice to see this family 2 years later and document another milestone in their lives.  Here are some favourite portraits and candid shots from that day.

Petey - i had to do a photo shoot recently. And in some ways photography is more difficult than video. Both have to find an excellent frame, with the right light and parameters set just so, but in photography you have to capture that one instant that will convey the whole atmosphere. So looking at those I see it and respect it. That is the professional level. When emotion is caught.ReplyCancel

On a cool spring day in Toronto I photographed Andreas’ Baptism at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.  I had previously taken his sister Naia’s photos ~2 years ago at the same church, so it was an honour to do so again.  As always it is a very special traditional ceremony to document.  Afterwards we headed to Paralia Greek Restaurant for the Reception in the East side of Toronto, right near the lake.  Here are some photos from the day.

Its winter here in Toronto, Canada so things have slowed down.  Photography is very seasonal for me, with more people preferring warm summer weather over frigid winter conditions.  And rightly so.  It gives me more time to shoot non-client work and shoot different films, experiment a bit more and do some personal photography projects that I might not have time do in the warmer months.  In this case I went to Yorkville and downtown with my wife, with my Pentax 645n medium format camera and a roll of Fuji Neopan Acros 100 black and white film.  I love the contrast, dof and the way the pictures look.  I still have to try Kodak T-Max and Tri-X and some Ilford as well.  Scanned and processed by Indie Film Lab.
