This was my first time documenting a Macedonian Orthodox Baptism.  It was at St. Clement of Ohrid Orthodox Cathedral in Toronto.  Not too different from the Greek, Ukranian or Serbian Orthodox Baptisms I have photographed previously.  There are sometimes different traditions during the Ceremony but for the most part it is very similar.  As always its very special to be a part of and an honour to document this for the family.  Here are some photos from this one.

Its winter time – slow season – so why not run a fun contest for a lucky couple?  So that’s exactly what we’ll do.  It is a $275.00 value and the winning entry (all couples are welcome whether just dating, engaged or married) will enjoy a free session somewhere in Toronto for up to 2 hours.  You will get a DVD of all the edited photos + online password-protected gallery of those images.  All you have to do is get 20 of your friends to follow me on Instagram.  I’m @PaulKrol on there.  On either my blog post or Instagram photo for this contest add a comment that you are interested in the contest.  I will assign each person a different number and then do a random draw and then check which person won.  I will message them and get from them a list of the 20 people that are following me and once I locate them, we are good to go.  You can pick the location in Toronto and the photoshoot must be done by May 1st, 2016.  Contest submissions end on Friday Feb 26th at midnight.

On a Sunday afternoon I visited the Toronto Harbourfront with my wife and 3yr old son.  It was about 6°C which is definitely a lot warmer than it should be in January.  We took advantage of this and walked around snapping some pictures before we ended up at the Amsterdam Brewhouse for some locally brewed pints and their famous giant pretzel with those amazing sauces.  It was also my first time shooting Fuji 400H film on my Contax G2 35mm film camera.  It was a fully overcast day as well so i’m still curious how it will look on a more sunny/bright day.  This was scanned/developed by the Find Lab in Utah.  Here are some pics from that 1 roll.

This is part 2 of my Artist Series where I shoot a roll of 35mm film and document a Toronto artist making their art.  This is a personal photography project that I have started and its something that I love to do in the slow winter months.  Part 1 can be seen here.  I had the pleasure to photograph Thierry Levesque, a talented Toronto artist who makes very colourful and unique art.  She works in her home and I think there is a lot of positive energy as you stand in the room literally surrounded by her art. Some of these pieces took over 50 hours of work so it was interesting to see parts of the process.  There is a frame of Thierry with a hula-hoop and the story behind that is that its a great stress releaser.  Imagine the time and effort spent doing something for hours at a time.  Every now and then she will bust out the hula hoop and spin away.  I shot this session on my Contax G2 with Portra 400 film that I rated at 800 and had my film lab (The Find Lab) push 2 stops.  Here are some pictures.

It’s winter now in Toronto so time for a personal photography project or two.  Last year I did a 5-part Coffee Series that helped me a little bit with telling stories.  This time around i’m doing an Artist Series where I will be featuring painters, sculptors, musicians and others.  I’m hoping to give you a glimpse into the life of an artist.  While they work on their craft.  In their space.  I wanted to do this in a documentary fashion so as to allow the artist to work unimpeded by my presence and camera.  The artist is obviously aware of my presence, especially in the beginning.  I stay back and try to let them relax and forget about me.  The first artist to be featured is Renzo.  He’s a busy creative who works full-time at an art gallery, creates art for himself and he’s a part-owner of Surfing Turtle Lodge in Nicaragua.  During this session while I nursed my coffee I saw Renzo getting lost in his painting.  It started off as a sketch and then he began mixing his different paints.  At that point he started to slowly get into his zone and really began focusing on his art.

I’m going to document these sessions with my Contax G2, a 35mm film camera.  Not only do I love the entire process of shooting film and the final product but it also creates its own challenge.  I will only shoot one 36-exposure roll per session.  I have to be a bit more thoughtful and analytical in my shot selection but also prepared to shoot at a moment’s notice.  Here I shot Kodak Portra 800 rated at 800 and scanned/developed by The Find Lab.

I’m also looking for more artists so if you are one yourself or know someone, drop me a line.
