Back in August 2020 I flew from Toronto to Calgary with my wife and 7-yr old, to visit Lake Louise in Banff National Park. It was our first time in Alberta and we stayed at the Deer Lodge Hotel which is located about a 5-min walk from Lake Louise. We lucked out with great weather and hardly any rain at all. The images below are not in any particular order. Some of them are but they are mostly random. On this 1-week trip we ended doing 6 hikes and 1 mountain bike trail. Every day after a big breakfast we would head out for a hike from either Lake Moraine or from Lake Louise. We did the Consolation Lakes Hike and Moraine Rockpile Trail from Lake Moraine and all the rest of the hikes originated at Lake Louise. These included the Lake Agnes Teahouse Trail, The Little Beehive to Lake Agnes Trail, the Plain of Six Glaciers Trail, and the Saddle Mountain Trail. They were all different and the views were exhilarating. As nice as pictures can be, they don’t capture the real feeling of the crisp mountain air, the danger on some of the trails where it gets pretty steep and one can slip, the chance encounter with a bear and the rewarding feeling of accomplishment upon completing a hike. The bike riding we did on the Bow River Loop near the Lake Louise village.
Our 7-yr old was a great hiker. He had his own backpack with water, clothing layers and snacks. Our longest hike was the 14.6km Plain of Six Glaciers trail which also had 588m elevation. The places were absolutely breathtaking and while there are tons of tourists at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, once you head off on most of these trails you leave 99% of the people behind. The very popular and fairly easy Lake Agnes Teahouse trail from Lake Louise did have a decent amount of people on the trail and of course at the final destination which was the teahouse – but even so you can find a lot of spaces there for yourself. I would love to come back here one day and try some new hikes although another visit to the Lake Agnes Teahouse for some delicious tea and warm biscuits with strawberry jam is worth coming back for. On this trip I used my Contax G2 film camera and I ended shooting 6 rolls of 35mm film – including Portra 160, Portra 400 & Fuji 400H. Developed by the fine folks at The Find Lab.
